The Production

A story of inequality, loss, and the fight for a future

Revolutionary combines compelling musical theater with meaningful engagement around issues including socioeconomic hardship, loss, opportunity, incarceration, homelessness, education, resilience, and access to a meaningful future.

The project seeks to give audiences more than a story to watch — it invites them into a conversation about the circumstances so many young people face, and the resilience it takes to push through them.

A True Story

Where Revolutionary began

The work has a deeply personal origin. AJ, a former student of founder Drew Pulver and a mixed-race young thespian, experienced profound socioeconomic hardship and loss — he did not know his incarcerated father, and his mother was killed. Drew ultimately became AJ's guardian.

Drew and AJ wrote lyrics together, making AJ not merely the inspiration for the work but a direct creative collaborator in its development. Then Drew's middle-school theater students challenged him to tell AJ's story — their insistence that this young person's experience deserved to be heard became the catalyst for the musical's development.

"Young people are not merely audiences for stories about social issues. They can be powerful creators, interpreters, advocates, and storytellers themselves."
